Method development for adult education – against illiteracy among marginalized groups
Lärljus is working to develop a public education-based educational method that aims to combat illiteracy among adults, with a particular focus on Somali-speaking target groups in the Horn of Africa. The method development is based on principles of participation, cultural relevance and accessibility, and builds on proven pedagogical models such as the ALEF method.

Core principles in method development:
1. Participant-centered learning
We base our learning on the participants' life situations, experiences and language. Learning is shaped through interaction between participants and leaders, with the individual's needs and goals at the center.

2. Functional literacy
The focus is on developing basic reading and writing skills linked to everyday and practical contexts. By anchoring the content in the participants' reality, meaningfulness and motivation are created.

3. Culturally and linguistically adapted material
The method is adapted to the participants' native language, in this case Somali, both spoken and written. Materials and pedagogy are designed with respect for local norms, gender roles and traditions, without compromising the individual's right to learn.

4. Empowerment and independence
The goal is to strengthen the individual's self-esteem and empowerment through learning. When adults learn to read and write, they gain tools to influence their life situation, participate in society, and take part in education and the labor market.

5. Locally anchored skills development
We collaborate with local organizations, leaders and facilitators to ensure long-term methodological anchoring and continuity. Teacher training and supervisor support are a central part of the methodological work.
